Home to the oldest civilization in Europe . . . . . .
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands. Here's the map. A mountainous island with natural harbours, Crete is an island steeped in history and culture with the added benefit of some good diving. Overfishing has led to a depletion of bigger fish (they ended up on someone's plate long ago!) but there is plenty to see and, combined with the history on the island, it makes for a great all round holiday.
By snorkeling alone, you see 2000 year-old amphorae beneath your fins. But if you are above beginner level, you can go wall diving, deep diving, night diving, cavern diving, reef diving and get acquainted with the colorful sea life. You’ll be diving in crystal clear waters, with impressive rock formations, steep walls, caves, and vivid color marine life. Of course, Crete is a big island, and the possible dive sites are almost countless, and all of them have something different to offer.

Alison and I are reasonably new divers, with about 20 dives each. I tend just to go for it, Alison has to be more confident before she can relax into her dives. I spoke with...
