The Red Sea, one of the most famous diving destinations in the world . . .
This is due to the good visibility (almost all year round) and the beautiful coral formations. The high salinity of the Red Sea (more water is lost through evaporation than enters from precipitation) means that the water retains heat.
The Red Sea has a very well established dive industry which, when it became popular some decades ago, resorts in Egypt were the busiest. However, recently, Jordan and Sudan have begun to outstrip them.
The Northern Red Sea was included in the Seven Underwater Wonders of the World by CEDAM International. The CEDAM acronym stands for: Conservation, Education, Diving, Awareness, Marine-Research. In 1989 CEDAM brought together a panel of distinguished marine scientists to pick underwater areas which they considered to be worthy of protection.
