Marsa Alam

Scuba diving in Marsa Alam
Overview:

Located in the southern section of the Red Sea and very close to the Elphinstone reef.  It was very popular for the Dugongs in Abu Dahab Bay, but there are now restrictions on the number of divers allowed.

Marsa Alam is only recently becoming a popular choice amongst divers, thanks to the opening of the new airport.

A consequence of this is that the reefs are far more pristine than in the northern Red Sea and the dive sites uncrowded.

However as with everywhere in the Red Sea, building work is on the increase and it can only be a matter of time before Marsa Alam becomes another Red Sea resort as popular as Sharm el Sheikh or Hurghada.

What to see:

Elphinstone Reef is the mythic dive site of the south. The walls plunge deep into the blue, richly decorated with soft, bright pink, red, white and brown corals, sponges, gorgonias and fans. Pelargics often swim by the spot to feed on the abundant reef fish population, but many other species, including dophins, fusiliers, jacks, snappers groupers and wrasse may also be seen.

The northern plateau is home to schooling hammerheads with frequent sightings of oceanic gray white tip sharks, along with Barracuda, numerous big Jacks and even Tuna.

Need to know:
  • Marsa Alam is more remote and as there are not many resorts to choose from, consider going full board as there's little scope for eating out.
  • Avoid Rogue Operators -  Dive only with legal diving operators on your next trip to Egypt’s Red Sea. All CDWS member dive operators have met ISO standards EN 14467 / ISO 24803 for diving to ensure your diving safety. Look out for the CDWS logo for the symbol of quality and safety.

agree that sea serpent is not that great  Grand Sea Serpent, Egypt 2 Star Rating Added: 3rd March 2012 by tingtong
Agree that Sea Serpent is not that great. Guide was more focused only on making his video to sell. I have been diving more than 10 years and have travelled all around the world, but this is probably one of the more extremes whereby I see the guide pushing his...

Sharks, finally !  Coraya Divers, Marsa Alam 5 Star Rating Added: 18th October 2011 by diverLux
I found this very last minute flight to Marsa Alam from my home town and couldn't resist . The dive base is much more busy compared to the last trip in June but still not hectic. The sea was a bit agitated for my liking and I spent 3 days...
Not Very Grand  Grand Sea Serpent, Egypt 2 Star Rating Added: 25th July 2011 by ThamesValleyJohn
I am going to take issue with the previous reviews as I did not like this boat, the staff or the system of diving. An initial warm welcome was the highpoint of the trip. The cabins are a bit tired and in need of refit but not substandard. The en suite...

A Great Week's Diving  Grand Sea Serpent, Egypt 5 Star Rating Added: 12th June 2011 by the_curl
Just returned from a week's diving on the Grand Sea Serpent and found it to be excellent value for money. Accommodation is very good (with the small storage spaces being ample for small amount of non-diving gear that you will take) with en-suite wet-room shower room & toilet. Lounge & dining...
Excellent for family  Coraya Divers, Marsa Alam 4 Star Rating Added: 3rd May 2011 by winsham
This is the best organised dive centre I have seen. If you are looking for a family holiday where you can do some diving this would be hard to beat. The bay where this is located is 5 mins north of Marsa Alam airport and there is little else around...
