Alabama - The Gulf Coast
Alalbama is one of the Gulf States. To the east of Alabama lies the state of Georgia and to the west lies the state of Mississippi. The state capital is Montgomery, although the largest city is Birmingham. Summers in Alabama are very hot with average temperatures in excess of 90°f/32°c and with winters averaging 40°f/4°c in the Mobile area, which benefits from the Gulf of Mexico.
There are a variety of dive areas in Alabama ranging from quarries to the expanse of the Gulf of Mexico. Diving can either be shore based or by charter from Panama City, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Mobile, Pensacola or Destin and a lot of the diving action is around oil rigs, where you will find the larger fish.
For quarry diving, one of the most popular sites is Dive Land Park, which has it’s own dive center and you can dive to a depth of 150 feet (45mtrs.) with visibility of 10-30 feet (3-9mtrs.). During the summer the water temperature in the quarry reaches 70°-80°f (21°-26°c) and in the winter it ranges between 40°-47°c (4°-8°c). Another quarry location is Pelham Keys, which is just south of Birmingham and covers 26 acres. Here you can dive and snorkel and there are a few interesting items to find such as a couple of fire engines, school bus and sunken boats.
