This scuba diving voluntourism project will take you to the beautiful 26 coral atolls that make up the Republic of Maldives. There you will help marine biologists study and protect its spectacular coral reefs and resident whale shark population.

All this because the Maldives government identified a need for further research and monitoring work as far back as 1997. Biosphere Expeditions is addressing this need with your help and will train you as a Reef Check EcoDiver. With this qualification you will then gather important reef and whale shark data and you will also be eligible to apply for PADI or NAUI Reef Check Speciality Course certification after the expedition. All the course materials and the certification as a Reef Check EcoDiver are part of your expedition contribution. |

The coral reefs that grow along the margins of this stunning landscape are still relatively untouched as influences such as industrial-scale fishing, pearl or scallop extraction or large numbers of recreational divers have not wreaked their destructive influence there. Marine conservation holiday in Madagascar
Our award winning tropical coral reef expeditions in South Western Madagascar, are open to volunteers of all ages. No previous scuba diving experience is necessary. We welcome volunteers from all walks of life and all ages to join our expeditions. Volunteers with no diving experience are trained at our project site to PADI certification level (Advanced Open Water or higher) and all volunteers are trained by our scientific staff in marine research and on-the-ground conservation.

Teams of 12-18 volunteers from all over the world work side-by-side with international scientists, Madagascar’s national marine institute, NGOs, and community members whose livelihoods depend on healthy coral reef ecosystems for survival. Expeditions usually last six weeks, but longer and shorter expeditions can be arranged. |

We are also planting mangrove forests across the devastation left behind by abandoned shrimp farms. We are playing an important part in looking after the colourful world of the coral reef and the fragile world of the mangrove swamp, and not just protecting them but also studying them and researching them, which is important for protecting them in the long term.
