Africa

Where else in the world can you combine fantastic diving with the chance to see some amazing wildlife?
Overview:
Welcome to Africa.... from the Atlantic coast to the Indian ocean, Africa offers some world class dive sites from Sodwana's pristine tropical reefs, Kenya's fringing coral reefs, Madagascar's barrier reef and the wrecks in the cold waters of Cape Peninsula.

Africa is the second largest continent in the world.  Its highest point is Tanzania's Mt. Kilimanjaro, the world's highest free-standing mountain and the Nile, the world's longest river.  Africa is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, by the Red Sea to the northeast and by the Indian Ocean to the southeast.

What to see:
Sardine and squid runs: South Africa
Great White sharks and underwater kelp forests: Cape Town
Ragged-tooth sharks: Aliwal Shoal, South Africa
Manta rays: Mozambique
Whale sharks: Djibouti, Mozambique, Kenya
Leatherback turtle nesting: Tanzania, South Africa
Humpback whales South Africa, Madagascar
Southern Right whales South Africa
Freshwater diving: Malawi, Zambia
Cave diving: Zimbabwe, Kenya, Cape Verde
Need to know:
  • Malaria is prevalant in many African countries.  Check for up-to-date advice before you travel.
  • Lariam (mefloquine) is an anti-malarial drug used in regions of the world where chloroquine resistant falciparum malaria is prevalent. e.g. East Africa, South East Asia.  Possible side effects of lariam, such as dizziness, blurred vision and a disturbed sense of balance, are common and could cause problems for divers.  These effects can often imitate or even worsen the symptoms of DCI. There could also be confusion between the side effects of lariam and the symptoms of DCI or nitrogen narcosis resulting in a misleading diagnosis.  Therefore, lariam must not be taken by persons intending to take part in scuba diving.

I've been on this M/Y for a recent scuba diving trip in Sudan. The ship is a total disaster. It's old, dirty and in bad condition. The dive master, Marina, does really not know what a scuba dive guide is. She was not a guide to us but simply taking her dives while "...
