Ukraine

Scuba diving in the Ukraine
Overview:

Ukraine is situated in the south-eastern part of Central Europe and has two stretches of water, The Black Sea and The Sea of Azov.

For technical divers, there is some seriously good diving, with some wrecks at almost 100 metres.

What to see:
  • The Ludmila - a Russian steamship, built in 1886 in England. There is a tablet in the engine room with the build date and the dockyard name.  In the captain`s bridge, the ships log was found confirming the name of the steamship, which is located close to Sevastopol.  It's 70metres long and lies at a depth of 90 metres.
  • There is a submarine from the post war period with a length of 65metres at a depth of 100metres close by.  The hatch of conning tower is open and the wreck is also close to Sevastopol.
  • The Tsarevitch Alexis, a magnificent yacht that used to belong to the Russian Imperial Family and met a similarly grim fate (the last tsar of Russia, Nicolas II, was executed by the Bolshevik secret police in 1918 with his wife Alexandra, his 15-year-old son - Tsarevitch Alexis - and their four daughters).  The yacht is one of the best-preserved in the Black Sea and one of the best dives. The visibility is usually very good.  After nearly a century spent at a depth of 55metres, the wreck is in very good condition. Exploration of the compartments will reveal that the panelling covering the partitions and floorboards which are clearly visible under a thin covering of sediment. You will also find remnants of crockery and broken crystal goblets.
