Laid back island life
Visit Date: February 2009
If you love to dive and prefer out of the way places, Salt Cay is for you. Debbie at Salt Cay Divers is the quintessential hostess, making sure you are happy and taken care of. Humpback whales that spend their summers off of Provincetown, MA make way to the Silver Banks via the Turks and Caicos in the winter so you have a good chance of spotting these majestic animals.
There are three restaurants on Salt Cay, each offering a different taste of the island. Cracked conch is a specialty.
Salt Cay is truly an escape and a place to get away from it all. If you yearn for the Carribean the way it used to be, totally natural and not built up, then this is the island for you.

Pleasant but not spectacular
Visit Date: February 2008
Salt Cay is not easy to get to, so we really hoped that the diving would make all the hassles worthwhile. All our dive gear was lost in transit, and the owner helped us get it back. Overall, I'd say that the diving was standard for the Caribbean, no better than we've had in places which were easier to access. The island is tiny and everything on it very basic, including the dive operation. There is no dive shop as such, just a general store. You can leave your gear outside the restaurant at the dock. We went out on a small boat each day for 2-3 dives which were pleasant enough but not spectacular. The biggest disappointment was that we visited in Feb., supposedly high season for humpback whales. As part of our package, we bought a daily whale-watching trip which was supposed to involve swimming with the great beasts. Not only did we not swim with them, we didn't see any! Not a single one! The island is remote, primitive, and laid-back. Don't come looking for luxury or night life and don't come specially for the whales. The diving is pleasant, but not spectacular. The dive operation is adequate and professional enough but small. The island suffered major hurricane damage since our visit, so check it out before you book.
Management Response
Thank you very much for taking the time to give us a review. Since you mentioned the major hurricane just want everyone to know we had such strong assitance from our past divers and friends of Salt cay that we are 100% totally operational since January of 2009. We are small, which makes us special and a tight community that got us back up and running in a few short months. Those of you that love small, personal and charming will love Salt Cay. As far as the whales, we have had spectacular encounters, but clearly this is not sea world which makes seeing them in the wild even more exciting when we do have encounters. Daily sightings are usual, but this year was not one of our better years. Hopefully 2010 will bring the type of action we are use to seeing. mantas here now! Very early for them, but exciting!
