coming back next time
Visit Date: July 2009
I was totally impressed. The boats are fast, Luis is great. He's the most helpful divemaster I've dived with. Put on your gear and go, he has it ready and prepared. He'll let you dive if you still have air. The last dive was 67 minutes. I'm coming back next month staying at Wyndham, and dealing with the hassle of diving with Babieca 5 miles away instead of Sand Dollar on site, mostly because of Luis.

WE'VE HAD BETTER... MUCH BETTER
Visit Date: July 2009
We are scuba divers; and, this was our 4th trip to Cozumel and 2nd stay at El Cid. In 2006 & 2007, we chose to stay at Fiesta Americana and used Dive House. We only switched back to El Cid to enjoy shore diving without the stronger currents experienced at FA.
El Cid is located on the outskirts of town, but within walking distance to a few restaurants, shops and convenience stores. I strongly recommend Ernesto’s for lunch – the shrimp burrito and fajitas are great. El Cid is a modest property with excellent shore diving. For more details about the hotel, you can read my tripadvisor review under El Cid.
Shore diving was great and Carlos was very accommodating with tanks and emergency gear (my computer died). We dove with Babieca the entire week and this is where we were somewhat disappointed. The boats were very fast, but too small for more than 4 divers and did not offer enough shaded protection from the sun. Lots of bottled water, but none of the orange and cantaloupe slices normally supplied as a minimum effort to remove the salt taste between dives. If you didn’t bring your own fruit, you just drank water. Also, no fresh water tub for cameras or masks -- not ideal for our Ikelite equipment. You'll have to "do your business" in the ocean.
Luis, the dive master was totally rigid and overkill with his safety methods. He was too serious and lectured too much about how, “if people don’t want to dive with me, they can go somewhere else.” He needs to lighten up and remember that divers are on vacation, not in a conference room. Not only that, but he constantly banged on his tank with a metal spoon throughout each dive. This distracted all of the divers with each sound – up, down, closer, here, there, come, stay, etc. Perhaps he should direct traffic. Frankly, the “umbilical cord” was way too short with Luis – something we didn’t enjoy and have never experienced with any other dive company in Mexico, Florida or the Caymans. Another dive master (who has a sense of humor and more engaging personality) should be available on a regular basis for the experienced divers.
We would easily stay at El Cid again. We would only dive with Babieca if, at the very least, we didn’t have Luis as our dive master. There is room for improvement with Babieca.

Babieca is one of the best in Cozumel
Visit Date: June 2009
We returned to El cid after just having a vacation with them in March 2009 and as always it was Wonderful!! The dive shop is Excellent, I would say they are the best dive outfit we have dove with after 3 trips to Cozumel since Nov 2008. I have total trust in Louis (their dive master) and don't think I would dive with anyone else. While we bring our own dive equipment we do also wash it each day and hang it out so i'm not sure if they will do this. The dive shop "Babieca" takes only small groups 8 at the most ( most of the time only 6). Louis is very much aware of all his diver and watches over them at all time. He is also very good at finding very hard to find sea life. If I could change one thing it would be them not having fruit for the divers between dives. we just have to bring our own... but like I said I feel completly safe with them and will not dive with anyone else.. they are also very good at bringing you where you want to dive... they wrech or punta surge (the devil's throat) one great thing about Coz, you can go to the same site twice and see different sea life each time... it is always GREAT, While it can be hard for a divemaster to keep track of all their divers during a drift dive Luis does it with expert skill.
.P.s.We have dove with others in coz and Babieca is one of the VERY BEST.
