Portugal
Portugal is a country in southwestern Europe, on the Iberian Peninsula.
The climate is mild, both in winter and summer. The rainiest months are November and December and the period with the lowest rainfall is from April to September. Portugal is a superb holiday choice for a sunny family holiday that includes scuba diving.
With a long coastline on the Atlantic coast, diving takes place at many resorts including Porto, Aveiro, Peniche, Lisbon, Sines, Sagres, Lagos and Faro.
It is probably fair to say that you wouldn't come to Portugal for its diving alone, but as part of an overall holiday, it can be very pleasant.
- U1277 submarine (Oporto) rests since 1945 at 31m (102ft) on a sandy seabed, with the stern completely silted up and lying at about 45 degrees on her portside. Although the bow is missing, the four torpedo launch tubes and the conning tower where the anti-aircraft guns were mounted are still visible. The U-boat was scuttled on the dawn of June 4th 1945 out of Cabo do Mundo, near Oporto, by order of her Commander, Captain-Lieutenant Stever, after sailing without orders through the Atlantic for month (the Armistice was signed on the 8th of May 1945, one year after her launch and almost one month before she was scuttled).
- Tiber passenger liner (Oporto) - sunk in 1847 off the coast near Porto
- The Sagres area is very popular for divers
It is worth checking with dive operators in advance as conditions can be difficult with tricky currents when diving the U 1277.
