Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea possesses some of the best dive spots in the world and many divers are aware of that now. Deep or shallow reefs, coral walls, sheer drops, barrier reefs, atolls, passages, lagoons and wrecks (many of them WWII wrecks), all with a unique variety of species, are found throughout the region.

PNG has about twice the amount of fish species as compared to the Red Sea, and roughly ten times as many species of corals are found here compared to the Caribbean.

What to see:
  • Milne Bay
  • Kimbe Bay
  • PNG lies within the Ring of Fire (the great chain of volcanos and calderas that circles the Pacific Plate), an area which offers the most species of marine life in the world.
Need to know:
  • Certification or vaccination against yellow fever or cholera is requiring for travelers over one year of age coming from or through infected areas.
  • Malaria is the only serious health risk (see link below for further information)
  • To assist with the continuing development of the dive industry in PNG, all divers are asked to pay an Environment & Safety Fee. The fee is US$3 or A$4 per diver and is paid direct to the dive operator for each day of diving. It is used to maintain the recompression facility and assist with the ongoing conservation efforts.
